Tom and Jerry

Let me introduce you to my little buds! Tom (left) is 16 and Jerry (right) is 13. I tutor them on Sunday evenings for two hours. In the beginning they were shy and it was harder to get them to talk. Now, 6 weeks into it, I can't get them to stop talking! I really like them! They have a great English, sometimes I think they are better than some of my college freshman! Jerry has a lot of energy and it can be hard to get him to sit still, so sometimes I will just tell him to go running up and down the stairs while me and Tom keeping talking :) It has been fun to teach younger kids and to come up with some creative ideas that keep them interested! We are hoping to get a few more tutoring jobs like them :)

First Day of School

First Day of School. The same nerves that run through everyone on their first day of school were kicking in as I walked up the stairs to room 203. I have never taught at a college level before, I definitely have not taught Chinese. Would they like me? Would they be able to understand? All these worries and thoughts were flying around my brain, but within an instant the madness stopped! As I let go of Jeremy's hand and stepped foot into my classroom, I was immediately filled with peace and joy! Their smiling faces and eager hearts just makes you melt :) I greeted the 10 or so students who arrived early and then began writing on the chalk board. It may be messy, but writing on a chalk board is totally teacher and made my day. Bieber Fever

Surrounded by sounds of horns, buses, and loud Chinese while walking down a crowded street can seem so foreign and a somewhat out of body experience. As we were walking down a shopping street trying to find our way, to my utter disbelief, I heard Backstreet Boys! Yes, I did stay and listen to the whole song, and it was wonderful! It is funny the things that remind you of home, the thing’s that make your heart smile when you live here. I would never think that hearing “Baby, baby ..ooohhh” by Justin Bieber would be a heart warming experience, but sadly because he speaks English and is totally American, I now have bieber fever! I have really enjoyed hearing some older, not so popular, pop songs and was not expecting to hear what I heard one day shopping for rugs. It was as if the Father was talking directly to me. It was a praise song in English! They had no clue what it was, but to me it was a reminder that He is with me…. anywhere I go! I was praising Him in English in a rug store! ...

Numb Gums

Just recently I had gum surgery. For those of you who have experienced any form of mouth discomfort, I am sure you have had the privilege of experiencing numb gums. It’s a strange thing to describe. Your lips feel huge, you can talk but you drool without knowing it, and when you try to eat or drink …well it doesn’t happen smoothly. The interesting part about numb gums, it’s wonderful that you can’t feel the incisions. But, the process of getting there hurts! Those with experience, I am sure you can confirm that shots in the gums is quite possibly the worst shot you have ever received. It’s funny as I go through the process of moving to China. I feel like at times I can totally relate my gum surgery experience to this. In the beginning there was a lot of anxiety with making my decision and actually obeying and following dads call to China, just as I was anxious about surgery.
